This year we worked on a collection of horse teeth from the University of Wageningen. They show the evolution of horse teeth during the horse’s life. The dentures are made of papier-mâché, painted and finished with layers of fish glue. Earlier in the year we had a life-size papier-mâché horse model from the collection of Wageningen in our studio for conservation.
For the conservation of the horse teeth, the surface dirt was removed using moist sponges. Loose particles were glued back in place and missing surface parts were filled with paper pulp and given a finish. We felt like being a dentist!
